Accessibility in housing survey
A survey published by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in March 2022 looks at accessibility in the nation's housing stock. Questions were designed to measure the share of homes that were accessible to those with mobility-related challenges.
Highlights
Almost 16 million (13%) of U.S. households include someone who used at least one mobility assistive device, such as a cane, crutches or wheelchair.
6% of U.S. households have at least one member who has difficulty entering the home or accessing or using the kitchen, bathroom or bedroom.
Households that include someone with accessibility needs were more likely to be in the South and/or include veterans or someone 65 years or older.
5% of homes reported having a ramp, compared to 1% with a chair, stair or platform lift.
