Corporate evolution
The company developed under a new concept that allowed agents to keep 100% of their commissions while paying a management fee to their agencies. When founders Dave Liniger and Gail Main cultivated the business idea in the early 1970s, most companies split commissions with their agents 50/50, and also paid for overhead. The RE/MAX concept proved popular, and the company expanded to 100 franchises in two years. RE/MAX continued to grow its business across the U.S., and then moved into Europe in 1994, including Spain, Germany and Italy. A decade later, the company started listing all U.S. homes for sale on its website and was seen as an innovator in the industry. In October 2013, RE/MAX Holdings Inc. became a publicly traded company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as RMAX.
Today, RE/MAX Holdings is among the top three real estate companies by sales volume. They expanded into the mortgage business in 2016 with the launch of Motto Mortgages, a mortgage broker franchise, and then acquired wemlo, a mortgage processing startup, in 2020. The company announced leadership changes in January 2022, with Stephen Joyce taking the helm of RE/MAX Holdings as CEO, and Nick Bailey moving into the role of president and CEO of RE/MAX, LLC.

Komen Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure, held in cities across the U.S.
